Northern Cyprus: why you could live there…

Cyprus is a place with perfect weather: the summers are long and winters mild and short. This Mediterranean country laced with the history of ancient civilisations is also offering many modern attractions. You will find there vast swathes of unspoiled countryside and empty beaches. In Northern Cyprus, politeness and hospitality is still expected, it is a place where the young ones love and respect their elders and criminality almost doesn’t exist.

North Cyprus is indeed a extraordinary little country which is now emerging from decades of political isolation to become a magnet for Europeans and Scandinavians searching for what the Mediterranean used to be.

North Cyprus, also referred to as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), is the Turkish Cypriot part of the island which has been separate from the Greek southern part since 1974. EU citizens may travel freely between the two sides of Cyprus.

Cyprus has always been considered as a desirable destination for Mediterranean people: Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Venetians, Ottomans and British have ruled at one time the island, and each has left marks on architecture, culture, culinar tradition, and even the landscape of this unique island.

The ruins of Salamis reflect the Roman and early Christian periods. While standing on the Venetian walls of Famagusta, you can have in mind shakespeare’s famous character “Othello” preparing to the battle against the Turkish fleet. In the evening, it is very pleasant to have diner under the floodlit walls of Bellapais Abbey, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and enjoy the gardens tended by monks about 900 years ago. In Kyrenia Castle you will find the oldest wreck of the world, a little trading boat that sunk with its cargo of wine and olives just outside the harbour around 300 BC.

Cyprus has a lot to offer to those who want a night out. Today the harbour’s old carob warehouses have turned into fashionable bars and seafood restaurants where you can eat, take a drink and meet people! But you may also prefere to dine in five-star plus international hotels and restaurants, or simply try the village tavernas serving homemade traditional dishes.

If you like physical activity: diving, fishing, cycling, mountain hiking, even paragliding, are among the many sports available in Cyprus. There is a world class 18-hole golf course, a leisure centre with bowling and gyms equipped with all the latest high-tec training aids. If you still have energy left after all this, you can enjoy nightclubs or open air dance, or maybe you will prefer a visit to a casino?

The roads infrastructure is constantly improving: many new highways have recently been opened, linking the east and west coasts and bringing the remote Karpaz Peninsula within easier reach. Karpaz Peninsula national park has unique landscapes, where you will find wild donkeys, turtle beaches and rare bird and plant life. On the way, there is the fantastic Karpaz Gate Marina, an expensive development which is the new entry point for yachts and pleasure boats.

Another recent addition to the country’s facilities is the Near East University Hospital which is becoming a regional leader in heart and cancer treatment. The Near East is one of many outstanding universities in Northern Cyprus. They attract students from Europe, Africa and the Far East. State schools are free with lessons in Turkish langage. As well, there are many good private educational institutions, such as the prestigious English School of Kyrenia.

Living in North Cyprus will be for you a unique experience: you will enjoy an extraordinary lifestyle only a few hours flight from major European cities, such as Paris, Lyon, Brussels. Spending the holidays in Cyprus is a good way to inspect and test the place. You could take the opportunity to visit some properties for sale or for rent, and get an idea of ??the quality of property market in Northern Cyprus.
