Buying a car in Thailand: the paperwork
To buy a car in Thailand, you must have a work permit and a certificate of residence. If you do not work but you have a retiree visa, you will be allowed to buy a car as well.

To buy a car, it is highly recommanded to hire a professional, who can take care of all the administrative part of the transaction. Besides avoiding to get ripped off, you will also save moments of doubt with the Thai administration. Your vehicle will then be delivered with its registration card and its license plate number.

The license plate of cars being delivered is red with black numbers. Be careful: you must wait to receive your final plate before starting to drive after sunset. It is forbidden to drive at night with a car having a delivery plate. The deadline for obtaining the final plate is one month.
